The measurements were performed on the 22nd April 2015 at 10:30 a.m during clear weather conditions. The EMF measurements were performed for the residence 19a Olympou str. and substation “Yiatros” in Nicosia. The following figures provide pictures of the area where EMF measuremets were recorded.
Limiting exposure values have been provided by the ICNIRP recommendations and are guidelines to many countries and organisations. The exposure limits at 50 Hz are tabulated in the following table according to the limits given by ICNIRP.

Table 1: ICNIRP exposure limits for Occupational and General public exposure
The substation is rated at a nominal power of 500 KVA. At the time when the measurements were performed the substation load was recorded as:
Red Phase |
Yellow Phase |
Blue Phase |
45A |
45A |
50A |
Table 2: Measured load current
From the resultant load of all three phases as shown above we note that the load is only 6.44 % of the nominal load (500 KVA Transformer). It must therefore be noted that during the summer or in periods of peak load this will directly affect and produce an increase to the electric and magnetic fields.
The highest magnetic field measurement was observed 1 m away from the front side of the substation at height 0.3 m (1m away from the starting point). The measured value at this point was 0.253 μT and a percentage of 0.253 % as compared to the ICNIRP General Public standard.
A detailed description of the maximum measured magnetic fields in the area under investigation, outside the substation, is shown in the following table.

Table 4: Maximum Magnetic Field Measurements.
The highest electric field measurement was observed inside the sitting room at the first floor of the apartment. The measured value at this point was 9.98 V/m and a percentage of 0.2 % as compared to ICNIRP General Public standard. A detailed description of the maximum measured electric fields in the area under investigation, inside the residence and outside substation, is shown in the following table.
