Underground Power Cables - Carlsberg Latsia

On the 5th of December 2006 at 9:00 am magnetic field measurements were performed for the Carlsberg Latsia underground power cable. The underground power cable of interest is located in Nicosia in an area opposite the central substation of Latsia.

The measured power cables are long XPLE cables that are buried below ground. The Carlsberg Latsia underground cables are rated at 7.6MW. The load at the time of measurement was 0.75 MW a percentage of 10% of the total load.

Limiting exposure values have been provided by the ICNIRP recommendations and are guidelines to many countries and organisations. The exposure limits at 50 Hz are tabulated in the following table according to the limits given by ICNIRP.

Table 2: Maximum field measurements of underground power cables area

The following plots show the magnetic field distribution in the measurement area at the heights of 0.3m, 1m and 1.75m respectively. The first plot provides the magnetic field distribution along the underground power cable for a 10m measurement line whereas the second plot shows the magnetic field distribution across the underground power cable.
